Wednesday's "What's On the Desk?"

Does anyone else have a collection of unused card pieces sitting on/around their desk?  I can't be the only one...

Well, I'm moving in two weeks, and need to pack up my craft room.  ðŸ˜“

Last Friday, two off-duty firefighter friends of my husband came over and helped us move two HEAVY pieces of furniture out of my craft room, down the curvy staircase 😮 and into the garage for a moving sale we were having.  I only had 20 minutes notice that they were on their way, so quickly had to pack up 6 drawers and an embarrassingly large number of items from the top of my desk, throwing everything into boxes.

Moving sale over and furniture gone, I moved two folding tables back into the spots vacated by the original furniture, and tried to reorganize the "stuff" so that I could still create for another week or so.  And that meant looking at left-over pieces:

Sitting in the mess that is now my craft room, I decided I needed to make a thank you card for these wonderful, selfless firefighters.  AND I needed to clean up my desk so I had room to create.  Let's see what I did.

They deserve a medal, so I simply added a piece of Navy ribbon to some left-overs.

And they are #1 for lending a helping hand.

Hmmm...needs a "number" sign:

That's better.

Now what?  Of course, it's a thank you card, so:

I 💗 the Well Written Framelits dies!  I cut out a bunch of "thanks":

and adhered them over and over to the front of the card.  Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets are the bomb when cutting out these letters!

OK, let's see what we have:

Just needed a word (are) using the Labeler Alphabet, and I completed my card.

And that was what was "on my desk" this week!

Just a note:  my apologies for the lousy photos!  I had to dismantle my photo station, so any pics I post for the next few weeks will not look very professional.  But I'll be back soon; please bear with me!  ðŸ˜Š

An Epic Day

I'm so in love with the Magical Day stamps and the Myths and Magic Suite!

The Magical Day stamps include mermaids, dragons, unicorns, a wizard and a knight.  Just what you need to make your own castle scene.  So how did I do it?

I started with the castle wall.  Easy peasy with the Brick Wall Embossing Folder; I pounced some Smoky Slate ink directly from the ink pad to the raised side of the folder, placed the Smoky Slate cardstock inside and gave it a trip through the Big Shot.  It looks so real!

But wait!  That window!  I knew the retired label punch would be perfect, but it was too long.  So I just snipped along one of the "seams" in the brick wall, punched the window, and carefully glued the wall back together.

Each image was stamped in Tuxedo Black ink on Whisper White cardstock and colored with Stampin' Blends.  The coordinating Magical Mates Framelits dies make cutting them out super simple!

And look at that pretty grass and vine to Rapunzel's window--that's the Myths and Magic Glimmer Paper cut with the framelits.

The sentiment is an "original" .  I took the "Wishing You a Lovely Day" from Lovely Wishes, and masked the "lovely".  Then I carefully masked everything but the "N" in "wishing" and stamped it to make "AN"--whew!  Good thing these are photopolymer stamps that I can see through!

"EPIC" is made using individual letters from the Labeler Alphabet--with this set you can make ANY word!

My nephew is a total Disney fanatic and loved to play with Legos when he was little.  I thought this would be a perfect card to celebrate his birthday.

Are you sold yet on Magical Day?  I'll have more samples soon; I can't stop playing with it!

A Momentous Birthday!

Monday is my dad's 90th birthday!  I think he's actually surprised to be knocking on this door, but he's in surprisingly good health (although quite deaf without his hearing aids).

My dad is not a "demonstrative" man.  He's only recently been able to say, "I love you" out loud.  But I've always known the feelings are there.  When he is in charge of purchasing greeting cards, he's much more prone to getting a humorous one rather than a sentimental one.

So this year, when it was time to make him a special birthday card, I decided to go a little rogue.  And I know he's gonna love it.  Take a look:

When I saw Wood Textures Designer Series Paper Stack, this piece of paper stood out to me.  I knew it would make a nice background, but as I got thinking about my dad's big birthday, this piece of DSP came jumping into my head, and I couldn't let it go.  "You have how many rings?"  LOL!

In order to use as much as the DSP as possible, this card is an unusual one--it's actually two 5" x 5" square cards, layered together.  Here's how it works:

Flip the front up, and this is inside (I love the Eastern Medallions Thinlits, and used them as the background for my Number of Years "90").

Then open the side:
and here is the inside.

Details:

  • The front uses the Wood Textures DSP on a base of the now-retired Delightful Dijon cardstock, with a skinny layer of Early Espresso
  • The sentiment is stamped using Labeler Alphabet in Delightful Dijon ink on Crumb Cake
  • Layer two is Early Espresso and Garden Green.  The Eastern Medallions thinlit was cut using Delightful Dijon; the Number of Years "90" was stamped using Early Espresso ink, cut with the Large Numbers Framelits, and cut again in Vellum, which was layered over the Espresso numbers
  • The inside of the card uses Letters for You (WOW!) stamped with Garden Green.  The Happy Birthday is a new thinlit - "Happy Birthday" and is cut using Garden Green cardstock
  • Although I forgot to take a photo, I used the Envelope Punch Board to create a custom, matching envelope for this oversized card
My dad has many "rings", but is a vibrant and socially aware man, who also happens to be a wonderful caretaker for my mom.

Happy Birthday, Dad!  I love you!
