Birthday Fishes

It's birthday month in my family with 4 birthdays over 2 weeks.  And today is my daughter's special day.  When I made this card, it wasn't intended for her - I was just having fun - but my husband thought it would be perfect for Aly, so...

I had the large fish sitting on my desk after playing with the fabulous Sea Life dies.  When I put it against a piece of the retired Whale of a Time patterned paper, it came together, but wasn't yet a birthday card.  Just a fish in the water.

But then I was looking at the Whale Done stamp set, and found the greeting "Hoping all your birthday fishes come true", and inspiration struck!

I had just gotten the Sale-a-Bration Counting Sheep set with the coordinating Sheep dies and there was my party hat!  Perfect!  So I cut a few more little fishies, stamped and cut the hats, and broke up the sentiment to get "Birthday Fishes".  Ha ha!  I loved it!

And inside:

It can be such fun to mix and match stamps and dies to find a way to use them in a different-than-expected way.  Take a look through your stash and see what you can find!

A Whale of a Birthday!

My youngest grandchild is ONE!  Today is Hannah’s birthday, and this card is for her, because, you know, she’s “kind of a big deal!”  😍

Yeah, I pulled out all the stops on this one, but why not?

And the images in the Whale Done designer paper made it easy!  First I punched the whale from the patterned paper, using the Whale punch.  And I “fussy cut” the sea turtle with my Paper Snips.  And finally, I used the patterned paper with the Smooth Sailing dies to create the sea grass.

Then it was all put together - a Basic White card base, with a Seabed-embossed Basic White layer and a frame cut with the Ornate Frames dies.  The greeting is from Whale Done, stamped in Tuxedo Black and cut with the Stitched Rectangle dies.

Happy 1st Birthday, Hannah!  You are a BIG DEAL to me!

Thanks a Ton!

I've been commissioned to make 50 cards for a friend (by November, so I'm good) and a few are for a 10-year old boy who writes thank you notes for gifts (does anyone really do that anymore?  I'm so impressed).

So I was trying to think of themes for his cards, and decided on Whale Done for one of them:

This is a "fun fold" card, meaning that it opens a little differently than a standard card.  The card base is 5-1/2" x 7" (instead of 5-1/2" x 8-1/2").  Take a look:

Isn't that fun?

When creating this card, I used a piece of the Whale of a Time patterned paper.  I cut it to 5-3/8" x 4", and then split it into two pieces - one is 5-3/8" x 2-7/8" and the other is 5-3/8" x 1-1/8".  This allowed me to continue the pattern across the front of the card, over the two panels.  And that 5/8" strip from the top of the paper is along the bottom inside:

I stamped the whale using Pretty Peacock ink, and punched it out using the Whale Builder Punch.

It's mounted to a Layering Circle on which some seaweed is stamped along with a Granny Apple Green greeting.

And check out that smiling sea turtle!  He is one of the images on the patterned paper - I used my Scan-n-Cut to cut him out so I could add him to the card.

I would love to get a card like this from one of my grandkids!  Wouldn't you?
